NOTE—all feeding schedules should be tailored to the needs of your child and should be discussed at well care visits with your pediatrician
1. FORMULA
- Must be fortified with iron after 6 months of age
- Must always be at least 20 oz in a day (bottle or mixed with cereal)
- Must be maintained until one year of age
2. BREAST MILK
- If you plan on breast feeding for more than 4-6 months speak to your doctor about supplemental vitamins
3. WHOLE MILK
- Not to be used until 11-12 months
- Use only WHOLE milk it is essential for brain development
4. CEREAL
- Start at 4 months of age
- Begin with Baby Rice Cereal and then if tolerated go onto Barley,
the Oatmeal
- Start with 1-3 teaspoons(of dry cereal) a day for 5-7 days. If tolerated may
increase to 1/4 to 1/2 cup/day (This is in addition to reg. feedings)
- Begin to develop good habits by splitting 1/2 for lunch meal and 1/2
for dinner
- Watch for rash or constipation
5. VEGETABLES
- Begin at 5 months
- Begin with yellow vegetables FIRST (carrots, yellow squash, yams)
- Begin with 1-3 teaspoons a day for 5-7 days. If no rash or diarrhea slowly advance to a full jar a day
- After you’ve tried all the yellow vegetables, begin green (peas, green beans, etc.)
- Remember to only try ONE NEW item every 5 days to see if there is an allergic reaction
6. FRUITS
- Begin at 5-6 months (after vegetables otherwise they’ll have a sweet tooth)
- Begin with banana or applesauce jar fruits and then advance to others as tolerated
- 1-3 teaspoons a day for 5 days
- Advance to 1/2 to 1 jar per day
- Remember only ONE NEW FRUIT every 5-7 days, to monitor for allergies
- AVOID CITRUS, PEACHES and BERRIES
7. JUICE
- Begin at 5-6 months
- Begin with apple juice 4-8 oz/day
- Remember only ONE NEW FRUIT JUICE every 5-7 days to see if there is an allergic reaction
8. MEATS
- Begin at 8-10 months
- Usually not well liked
- Advance slowly as in other foods above
- NO HOME COOKED RED MEAT during the 1st year
9. FINGER FOODS
- Between 6-12 months
- Cheerios, Zwieback crackers and baby pretzels
- VERY IMPORTANT—watch to ensure that baby doesn’t choke on these
10. DAIRY PRODUCTS
- Start between 6-12 months
- Try baby yogurt, cottage cheese, slices of cheese
- Monitor for diarrhea
11. PASTA
- Start between 6-12 months
- Pastina, mashed pasta, farina
- Begin 1/4-1/2 cup/day
- This will take the place of cereal
- Mix these with small amounts of butter, margarine, even mix in vegetables
